Last night, MUSC’s School of Health Promotion and Slow Food Charleston partnered to host a screening of Byron Hunt’s film ‘Soul Food Junkies.’ This film did an excellent job of covering all the complicated nuances that influence how a generation is being harmed by the foods we eat. When Fresh Future Farm opens next winter we plan to address many of these challenges:

1) Eliminate barriers to accessing to fresh, healthy food by operating in a food desert.
2) Retire food policing, so customers will be able to purchase some of their snack faves alongside our healthy choices.
3) Offer food demonstrations to show how culturally relevant healthy recipes can be quick to prepare, delicious and affordable. Local chef Benjamin Dennis (pictured below) will help us deliver that culinary message to our customers.
4) Borrow marketing techniques from processed food advertisers to create excitement about our products.
5) Demonstrate that inner-city farming is a good way to earn a living and train North Charleston residents to take on the task.

These innovative practices (and great coaching from mentors George Hartley and Richard Hendry) are the reason that Fresh Future Farm has made it to the final round of a local $20k Social Venture Partner (SVP) Fast Forward competition that will wrap up next Wednesday, October 29th.
